It’s something that really fascinates me — when does trying new things stop being fun and start being scary and hard?
My seven year old made her first batch of passionfruit curd tonight, and as I posted the obligatory photo of her on Facebook, I wondered why I was so proud of this. After all, she cooks regularly and they are not (all) recorded for posterity on social media.
As I thought about it, I realised it was because in my mind, curd was one of those “hard” things to do. Actually it was really easy, and because she has no preconceived ideas of what is hard/not hard, she just gave it a go.
Which made me think, what else do we avoid because of some preconceived idea that it is hard (and therefore that the risk of failure is higher!) I have written about this before here and here.
So, this week, my challenge to myself and to you is to look for those messages from our brain on why we can’t do something, and really challenge those thoughts, and give something new a go. We may fail, true; but we will be further ahead because we have given it a go, so that is not really failure is it? If you feel brave, you can even report back.
