There was a bit of a dustup at the fish and chips shop last night….
It’s not how we like to think of leadership. Usually, when we say the word leadership we have a positive, heroic image in mind. Nonetheless, leadership it is.
Every single successful person I have ever spoken to cites learning more from failure than from easy success. But perfection, by its very nature doesn’t allow for those bumps or squiggles.
But just adding extra entitlements to employees isn’t necessarily the answer. It’s not about employees getting more. But rather, that what’s already there is looked at through a more flexible lens. That there is give and take both ways. That flexibility given by the employer is acknowledged and reciprocated by employees.
It turns out that there are just two words that employees want to hear. Even in preference to a pay rise.
Who does what, and how much is often a source of malcontent in teams. Being aware of this bias is a helpful first step. Researchers suggest that a first step to dealing with this conflict is to estimate the other person’s contribution BEFORE comparing it to your own or the rest of the team’s.
A “growth mindset,” on the other hand, thrives on challenge and sees failure not as evidence of unintelligence but as a heartening springboard for growth and for stretching our existing abilities.
Change and leadership are inextricably linked. Often leaders are brought in to introduce change, and always change requires great leadership if it is to be successful.
Ask yourself, if this is what your life looked like in five years, ten years time, would you be happy? Often we tolerate a lifestyle because we tell ourselves it is short term, but the reality is somewhat different.
