Every day I read article upon article, research paper upon research paper. When they are all condensed – they all say a variation of this: “do these things.”
So, what are these things that will improve your leadership and give you a more productive team?
- Ask the right questions. Then listen. Then ask more questions.
- If you have asked questions, tell people what you are now going to do. If you’re not going to do anything, tell them that. And why.
- Don’t be a disingenuous d#ck.
- Be authentic. Vulnerability works; be open.
- Don’t tell lies. If you make a mistake; own it.
- Be clear on what you expect and why.
- Hold people to account if they don’t perform. But support them to be their best so that they do.
- Think what you would want in the situation. Think how your customer would expect you to treat your people.
- Say please and thank you.
- Praise openly and genuinely.
- Give feedback – honestly, clearly and humanely (in private).
- Be open to new ways of thinking, working and doing.
- Value diversity in every form.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- If we just did these things, and nothing else – our workplaces would improve immeasurably.
- Pick one that you’re really good at – and do more of that.
- Pick one that you’re not very good at – and work out a plan to get better at it.
- And if you don’t know what you’re good and not good at – ask your people.
