Six tips to an extraordinary culture
Every so often you read an article that sums up pretty much everything you believe about a subject. This article from HBR on how Netflix reinvented HR, is one such article.
This, this article, is what I believe that a high performing work culture should look like. And these tips, they will help you get there.
Tips for an incredible workplace culture
- Treat people like adults – do away with the processes, the policies and the forms. Instead, hire great people who (almost all of the time) will do the right thing.
- Tell the truth – if something isn’t working, if someone doesn’t fit, if the organization has moved on; tell the person. Don’t resort to formal processes to try to muddle through. Don’t ignore it. Face up to it, have a conversation with dignity and respect. Treat the person fairly and compassionately.
- Building great teams and building great culture is not the responsibility of HR. It is the responsibility of the managers and leaders of the business. And as the business grows, leaders need to be aware that the subcultures might just require a different approach.
- Walking the talk not just talking the talk is important. No, not just important, it is critical to culture. Not just “do what I say”, but “see what I do, now do it too”.
- Make sure that employees truly understand the levers that drive the business and their role in it.
- And finally, the role of HR and talent: good talent managers think like businesspeople and innovators first, and like HR people last.
That’s it .. So simple. And yet so incredibly incredibly powerful.
