It’s something we have all been guilty of this at one point or another; whilst attending a course or doing some personal coaching, we have a blinding personal insight.
At the time it feels like that insight could substantially change the way we do things in the future. Or make sense of why we have done things in the past.
We leave the coaching or programme full of good intentions to do “something” different.
And then – nothing. Nada. No change.
It’s like a fleeting dream, that at the time felt so very significant. Upon waking, you are just left with a whiff of something important that you’ve missed.
Insights without action are useless
It’s why programmes usually have some sort of action learning at the end, where they implore you to think about how you will implement what you have learnt. And why coaching usually has four weeks in between sessions, where you can practise what you’ve talked about.
It’s a sad but true fact – insights without action are useless. Nice to know – but, so what?
What will you be doing with the insights?
If you’re in a long term development or coaching programme of any sort, it can be easy to get into a cycle of coming along to the sessions, having insight after insight – but not doing anything with those insights.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- If you have recently attended a development programme of some kind – what insights did you gain?
- If you re being coached – what key things are coming up as areas of clarity?
- How can you build time into your day to work on these? Whether that is practising some new approach or skill, or simply fully processing the insight?
- What can you do to make sure that the insight isn’t wasted? That you are actually doing something with it.
- This doesn’t happen organically. It requires structural change – whether that is diary management or a change in habits or some other deliberate action.
