Recruit for attitude, train for skill. It’s a common place approach to recruitment. Of recent times, cultural fit has replaced attitude as something to recruit for. Cultural fit (or lack thereof) is one of the key reasons that employees don’t work out. So it makes sense that when you’re recruiting you’re conscious of this.
However, and there is a big however. One of the downsides of cultural fit is that often you’re looking for “people like us”.
That’s ok – except that it can really limit diversity.
Why does diversity matter?
We know that diversity brings a huge number of benefits. Research shows it can improve decision making, innovation and profitability. It also means you are more likely to represent the consumers or customers that you serve.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Think about what you mean when you say “cultural fit”.
- Are you looking for a cookie cutter approach to recruitment?
- What impact could a lack of diversity of thought, approach and background have on your team and those that you serve?
- Have you thought about what role/diversity each team member plays within your team?
