This is a great article from HBR on core values that “everybody” has. You can probably guess them before you even read the article. You may even have these value statements up on the walls.
So – want to guess which ones are on the list?
Of course, it is the usual suspects –
Integrity.. Now I don’t know about you – but when Enron (and more recently, the Commonwealth Bank) has this as one of their values – it kinds of devalues the word.
Teamwork .. Surely this is something that all organisations aim for – because without proper teamwork, it’s pretty hard for companies to be successful.
Authentic .. As opposed to??
Customer Centric .. Hmm, if you’re not focussed on your customer – there’s probably a bigger issue..
The main point that the article points out is that all organisations should be like this. It’s price of entry behaviour (albeit, hard for some to live by it seems).. Values should be what makes your organisation different; they should show a bit of your DNA.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
So, if you’re looking around the walls – and can see these statements plastered all over your walls – perhaps it is time to dig deeper. What did you really mean by them? Perhaps there are words that better describe your DNA, who you really are. And better still – what are the behaviours that illustrate these values?
