When you’re going through any sort of big challenge, one of the less fabulous characteristics is that feeling of being alone. As though you are the first person ever to navigate such a challenge.
It’s not true of course – but it can feel like a lonely ol place at times.
Which is why it can be so powerful to have someone say: “I have your back”. To know that there is someone actively looking out for you.
To allow you to focus on what is front of you. And that the other person will cover what you cannot see.
In the workplace, this often takes the form of sponsors. That is key people who are actively looking out for you, and supporting you. But it can also be a mentor or your boss or your team.
There is something quite emboldening knowing that you’re not alone. And it can be freeing to know that you can focus on what is in front, knowing that there are others who are actively looking for what you cannot see.
Every incredibly successful person I have ever interviewed has spoken of how such people provide the shoulders on which to climb higher. Here’s an excerpt from an interview with Donny Walford who speaks to exactly this point.
So today’s leadership message is two fold.
- Who has your back in the workplace? Do you have a sponsor or mentor? And if not, can you take time to reflect on the benefits that both would bring?
- And who do you play the sponsor or mentor role for?
